To help address the loss of Iowa City housing stock in the 2008 floods, the City of Iowa City has received funding approval from the state for the second round of the Single Family New Construction Unit Production Program that will build 37 new homes by builders. The Iowa Department of Economic Development will be the one that will provide the fund for the program.
The new homes will consist of single-family detached homes, townhouses, duplexes, zero-lot lines and condos, which will be constructed in different areas across the City. In 2009, in the first part of the program, 40 new homes were built.
Qualifying applicants must satisfy income guidelines, qualify for a mortgage, and work with a local lender who is collaborating in the program. New homes will be purchased from $125,000 to $180,000, and a 25 percent down payment assistance program will be available as well.
Eligible applicants will receive down payments in the form of a five-year forgivable loan. This simply means that homeowners that will stay in the home for five years will not be required to repay the down payment amount. New homes construction will start this summer.
The City will repeat the same selection process implemented last year, because there are probably to be more applications than available new homes by builders Iowa. The first priority will be the flood-impacted families, followed by first-time homebuyers, and lastly, residents of Johnson County. To determine the order in which applicants will make their selections, a random drawing of names within each group will be held.
